Maine has disqualified Donald Trump from its primary ballot for the 2024 US presidential election, making it the second state to bar him due to his alleged role in the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack.
Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, a Democrat, asserted that Trump incited an insurrection by spreading false claims of voter fraud and encouraging supporters to disrupt the Capitol certification process.
Trump’s campaign plans to object to the decision, calling it “atrocious.” The ruling, which can be appealed, may impact Trump’s eligibility for the November general election.
This move follows a similar disqualification in Colorado, marking Trump as the first candidate barred from the presidency for engaging in insurrection.
The decision underscores the ongoing legal challenges surrounding Trump’s candidacy and raises questions about his eligibility under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment.
