A recent survey conducted by Ipsos Pakistan reveals that the majority of Pakistani youth prefer to stay in their home country rather than migrate abroad. The study, carried out from September 20 to 27, 2024, surveyed over 1,600 individuals aged 18 to 34.
When asked about the possibility of leaving Pakistan permanently, 74% of respondents expressed a desire to remain and contribute to national development. Only 26% indicated a willingness to move abroad if given the opportunity.
Migration Trends
Among those inclined to emigrate, the Middle East emerged as the top destination. Saudi Arabia was the most preferred choice (30%), followed by Dubai (20%). Other favored destinations included the United Kingdom (9%), Canada (8%), the United States (8%), Europe (5%), and Australia (3%). Smaller percentages of respondents showed interest in Turkey, Qatar, Italy, and Germany.
Regional and Class-Based Insights
The survey highlighted significant regional and socio-economic disparities in migration preferences:
- Islamabad had the highest percentage of youth aspiring to leave (46%), followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (35%), Punjab (27%), Balochistan (21%), and Sindh (20%).
- Socio-economic class played a key role, with 36% of respondents from the privileged class expressing a desire to move abroad, compared to 28% from the middle class and 23% from lower-income groups.
A Growing Commitment to Local Development
The findings indicate a strong sense of commitment among the majority of Pakistani youth to staying and contributing to their country’s progress. However, the report also underscores the need to address the aspirations of those considering emigration by creating more opportunities for growth and stability within Pakistan.
The survey provides valuable insights into the perspectives of young Pakistanis, highlighting both their challenges and their potential to shape the nation’s future.
