Malaysia defeated Pakistan 3-1 in the Asian Hockey Champions Trophy in Chennai, India.
Malaysia demonstrated their attacking power with several circle penetrations in the first quarter, but they were unable to get the critical touch. Malaysia earned a penalty corner in the seventh minute, but Akmal Hussain of Pakistan saved it.
Pakistan, undeterred, started their own onslaught. In the 12th minute, they were granted a penalty corner but were unable to capitalise. Two minutes later, another opportunity presented itself, but Pakistan failed to capitalise, resulting in a goalless first quarter.
Just before the conclusion of the second quarter, Malaysia’s consistent attacking efforts finally paid off. Faizal Saari broke the deadlock with a well-executed finish. In the following minute, Malaysia added another goal, bringing the score to 2-0 just before halftime.
Returning to international play after a seven-month hiatus, Pakistan showed determination as they approached the third quarter with an aggressive strategy. Early on, Abdul Hannan received a pass within the circle but couldn’t maintain control. Despite several attempts by Pakistan, Malaysia’s defense remained organized.
After an entry from the left flank, Pakistan was awarded a penalty corner, but Malaysia’s Hafizuddin blocked the shot. Pakistan persisted in their efforts, securing another penalty corner, but Malaysia’s tenacious defence prevented them from breaking through. Malaysia increased their advantage to 3-0 three minutes later, thanks to a fantastic assist from Faizal Saari. Malaysia had a dominating 3-0 lead at the end of the third quarter.
South Korea defeated Japan earlier in the day by a score of 2-1. Six teams will compete in the tournament: Pakistan, India, China, Japan, Korea, and Malaysia.
Pakistan is scheduled to play archrival India on Wednesday. Due to sponsorship, the 2023 Men’s Asian Champions Trophy, officially known as The Hero Asian Champions Trophy Chennai 2023, is the seventh edition of this men’s hockey tournament for the top six Asian national teams. The Asian Hockey Federation is in charge of organising the event.
Chennai has hosted the Men’s Hockey Asia Cup in 2007.
