Due to the illness of Mullah Muhammad Hassan Akhund, Taliban supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada nominated Maulvi Abdul Kabir as acting prime minister of Afghanistan on Wednesday, according to Khaama Press News Agency.
Maulvi Kabir, the former deputy prime minister for Political Affairs, will now lead the Taliban administration until Akhund recovers.
It should be mentioned that Akhund has served as the Taliban government’s prime minister since the group’s return to power in 2021.
Although Taliban officials have not provided any information regarding Akhund’s sickness, a news outlet citing sources reported that he was suffering from heart problems.
Maulvi Kabir recognises from the eastern Paktika province and is of the Zadran tribe. From 1996 to 2001, he was the governor of Nangarhar province under the Taliban rule.
He is a prominent Taliban member who played an important role in the negotiations with the US in Qatar, which resulted in the signing of the Doha Agreement between the US and the Taliban.
Maulvi Kabir was selected as the Taliban’s economic deputy’s assistant when the Taliban reclaimed power in August 2021, and then as the Taliban’s prime minister’s political deputy.
