Following the successful commissioning of the “wet test,” Unit-1 of the Karot Hydropower project with a capacity of 180 MW of energy started to operate.
Wet commissioning for Unit-2 has also begun. The remaining units will be tested and commissioned as planned by the Karot HPP team, with assistance from the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC).
The Karot Hydropower Project is China Pakistan Economic Corridor’s first large-scale hydropower project (CPEC). After completion, the project will have a total installed capacity of 720MW and will provide about 3.2 billion kWh of clean energy annually.
It will fulfill the electricity needs of nearly 5 million Pakistanis, easing the country’s power supply constraints.
By the middle of 2022, the project hopes to begin commercial operation. The China Three Gorges Corporation is funding the Karot Project as part of its global drive for “Clean & Green” infrastructure development.
