In a major development, the federal government on Wednesday appointed Muhammad Abdullah Sumbal as the new Punjab chief secretary in place of Kamran Ali Afzal.
A notification to this effect has been issued by the Establishment Division.
In a related development, it is reported that Punjab IGP Faisal Shahkar resigned from the position and submitted a report to the provincial secretary of services in Punjab.
When Kamran Afzal refused to work and demanded to be transferred to another post a few months ago, a crisis occurred in Punjab.
Later, he applied for leave a couple of times during which Sumbal was given an additional charge.
When Usman Buzdar of PTI was in charge in September 2021, Afzal’s appointment was approved. During the three years of the prior PTI-led government, he was the fifth bureaucracy chief in Punjab.
