Today (Friday), the eleventh anniversary of the Gayari tragedy is being observed to pay tribute to those who accepted martyrdom in the tragic avalanche near the Siachen Glacier region.
Siachen is located in Kashmir. The no-man’s-land is 20,000 feet (6,000 metres) above sea level. According to military specialists, the harsh environment and avalanche-prone terrain have claimed more lives than gunfire.
A big ice avalanche damaged a Pakistani military headquarters at Gayari, 30 km west of the Siachen Glacier terminal, in the Siachen Glacier region, on April 7, 2012. The Gayari base is one of the most important Pakistani bases in the area, located in a steep valley at 3,775 metres (12,385 ft) above sea level.
Pak-Army knows how to deal with all threats, says Gen Raheel Sharif at Siachin
Tanveer, Lt Colonel, headed the Northern Infantry Battalion in the Gayari Sector. As a result of being trapped by an avalanche, 129 Army men were killed.
After the accident, the Pakistan Army launched a search operation that lasted nearly two months. All of the fatalities were designated martyrs on May 29, 2012.
Gayari base is one of Pakistan’s most important bases in the area. It serves as a vital supply corridor for personnel as well as supplies travelling to more outlying outposts, and it is close to a military hospital.
