Hosts Take 2-0 Lead in the Five-Match Series
New Zealand delivered a commanding performance to defeat Pakistan by five wickets in the second T20I at University Oval, Dunedin on Tuesday. With this victory, the Black Caps extended their lead to 2-0 in the five-match series.
The game was reduced to 15 overs per side due to persistent rain, but New Zealand adapted seamlessly, chasing down Pakistan’s 136-run target with 11 balls to spare.
Pakistan’s Struggles with the Bat
Opting to bat first, Pakistan’s innings got off to a rocky start as Hasan Nawaz fell for a second consecutive duck in the very first over, dismissed by Jacob Duffy. Their woes deepened when Mohammad Haris (11) was removed by Ben Sears, leaving Pakistan at 19-2 in 3.1 overs.
Captain Agha Salman (46 off 28 balls), along with Irfan Khan (11), attempted to rebuild the innings, adding 31 runs for the third wicket. However, Ish Sodhi’s brilliant spell turned the tide, as he dismissed both Irfan and Khushdil Shah (2) in quick succession, reducing Pakistan to 52-4.
Vice-captain Shadab Khan provided some resistance with a quick 26 off 14 balls before Duffy struck again. Late cameos from Shaheen Afridi (22) and Abdul Samad (11) helped Pakistan reach 135/9 in 15 overs.
New Zealand’s Bowlers Shine
New Zealand’s disciplined bowling effort saw Duffy, Sears, Sodhi, and Neesham claim two wickets each, ensuring that Pakistan never found momentum.
Explosive Start Sets Up New Zealand’s Chase
In response, New Zealand’s openers put Pakistan on the back foot immediately. Tim Seifert (45 off 22 balls) and Finn Allen (38 off 16 balls) forged a blistering 66-run partnership.
Seifert dominated the powerplay before becoming Mohammad Ali’s maiden T20I victim. Allen continued his aggressive stroke play before he was dismissed by Jahandad Khan.
Pakistan attempted a fightback as Khushdil Shah removed Mark Chapman cheaply, and Haris Rauf dismissed both Jimmy Neesham (14) and Daryl Mitchell (14).
However, Mitchell Hay (21 not out) and captain Michael Bracewell calmly guided New Zealand to victory with 11 balls to spare.
Pakistan’s Bowling Struggles Continue
Pakistan’s bowlers failed to contain New Zealand’s batting onslaught. Haris Rauf was the standout performer, claiming 2 wickets, while Mohammad Ali, Khushdil Shah, and Jahandad Khan chipped in with one each.
Series Outlook
With New Zealand now leading 2-0, Pakistan faces an uphill battle to stay alive in the series. The third T20I is scheduled for January 17 in Dunedin, where Pakistan will aim for a crucial comeback.
