In a bid to boost its tourism sector and revive economic growth, New Zealand announced new visitor visa rules on January 27, allowing travelers to work remotely while exploring the country.
The change was introduced by Minister of Immigration Erica Stanford, who highlighted the potential of this move to attract a new category of tourists—digital nomads. “We want people to see our country as the ideal place to visit and work while they do it,” she stated.
Stanford acknowledged the popularity of digital nomad visas globally and expressed optimism that this initiative would encourage tourists to stay longer and spend more. “We hope they fall in love with New Zealand during their stay, fostering stronger connections with our country,” she said.
The tourism industry in New Zealand has struggled to return to pre-pandemic levels, with international visitor numbers at just 86% of 2019 figures. Additionally, the economy faced a technical recession in the third quarter of 2024, prompting the government to find innovative ways to stimulate growth.
Minister of Economic Growth Nicola Willis added, “The government’s goal is to position New Zealand as a welcoming haven for the world’s talent. This could also lead to stronger business ties in the future.”
With its breathtaking landscapes and a reputation for quality of life, New Zealand hopes the new visa rules will attract remote workers eager to explore while staying productive. The government sees this as an opportunity not only to boost tourism but to establish New Zealand as a global hub for innovation and connection.
The initiative has been met with excitement from both local businesses and potential travelers, as New Zealand sets its sights on becoming a top destination for digital nomads worldwide.
