Norwegian footballer Ole Saeter, eligible to represent Pakistan due to his mother’s heritage, has declined a substantial offer from Israeli club Maccabi Haifa on moral grounds.
Saeter was offered around $910,000 (approximately PKR 264.3 million) but refused, citing Israel’s involvement in violence against children and the elderly. “Even if I were offered $500 million, I would not join an Israeli club,” Saeter said, emphasizing his principles over financial gain.
He further demonstrated his connection to Pakistan by sharing photos on social media, proudly wearing a Pakistan football team jersey.
Recently, FIFA postponed its decision on a Palestinian request to suspend Israel from international soccer due to the ongoing Gaza conflict. A legal review of the Palestinian Football Association’s accusations against Israel’s Football Association is scheduled for October.
The Palestinian Football Association claims Israel violates international law, discriminates against Arab players, and operates clubs in occupied Palestinian territories. In contrast, Israel denies these allegations. According to reports, at least 92 Palestinian footballers have died in the conflict, with facilities destroyed and leagues halted. The Palestinian association seeks FIFA sanctions on Israeli teams, including the national team and clubs.
