In a historic milestone, Pakistan’s onion exports have soared past $210 million for the first time in the nation’s history, with projections indicating a further rise to $250 million by year-end, marking an unprecedented achievement.
The spokesperson for the Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters Association declared this feat as unparalleled in the annals of the country’s export history, surpassing even fruits and vegetables in terms of revenue generation.
From July 2023 to April 2024, Pakistan witnessed a remarkable surge in onion exports, crossing the $210 million mark. This achievement outstrips previous records, including that of orange exports, which stood at $210 million. Anticipating continued growth, the spokesperson asserted that onion exports are poised to reach $250 million by the end of the fiscal year.
The spokesperson attributed this remarkable success to the ban on Indian onion exports, which opened new avenues for Pakistani onions in global markets, particularly in the Far East and the Middle East. Pakistani onions have now secured a prominent presence in top international stores, signaling a significant breakthrough in market penetration.
However, acknowledging the need for continued government support, the spokesperson emphasized the importance of enhancing the shelf life of onions to capitalize on emerging market opportunities.
In a related development, Pakistan’s fruit exports have also witnessed a notable upswing, recording a 17.85% increase during the first ten months of the current fiscal year compared to the same period last year. According to data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), fruit exports during July-April (2023-24) reached $274.227 million, reflecting a robust growth trajectory.
April 2024 saw a particularly impressive year-on-year increase of 29.32% in fruit exports, with figures standing at $8.161 million compared to $6.311 million in April 2023. However, on a month-on-month basis, exports experienced a decline of 58.51% in April 2024 compared to March 2024, indicating fluctuations in market dynamics.
These achievements underscore Pakistan’s growing prowess in the global agricultural trade landscape, with the overall merchandise exports witnessing a commendable 9.10% increase during the first ten months of the fiscal year 2023-24 compared to the previous year.
