London – April 25, 2025
In a significant step to promote Pakistan’s intellectual and cultural heritage globally, the Government of Pakistan and the University of Cambridge have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish the “Allama Iqbal Visiting Fellowship”. The signing ceremony took place at the Pakistan High Commission in the UK, with Pakistan’s High Commissioner Dr. Mohammad Faisal representing the country.
The newly established fellowship will be hosted at Cambridge’s Centre of South Asian Studies and is dedicated to advancing the study of Pakistan’s history, literature, culture, and philosophy, all under the name of Allama Muhammad Iqbal, Pakistan’s national poet and philosopher. The fellowship aims to foster academic research and collaboration on Iqbal’s contributions to the intellectual and philosophical foundations of Pakistan.
The event was attended by senior officials from both the Pakistani and Cambridge academic communities, including Professor Kamal Munir, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, and Professor Shruti Kapila, Director of the Centre for South Asian Studies.
In his address, Dr. Mohammad Faisal highlighted the significant role of Allama Iqbal in shaping Pakistan’s ideological foundation, stating that Iqbal’s philosophy and poetry laid the groundwork for the Pakistan Movement and deeply influenced the country’s founding figures, including Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. Dr. Faisal emphasized the importance of this MoU in strengthening the educational and cultural relationship between Pakistan and the United Kingdom.
The fellowship will see the Government of Pakistan nominating distinguished scholars, one of whom will be selected each year to serve as a Visiting Fellow at Cambridge. The selected fellow will engage with both students and faculty, focusing on topics related to Pakistan’s history, language, literature, and geography. The fellows will also contribute to teaching in areas such as Urdu, Pakistan Studies, and other cultural subjects, enhancing academic exchange between the two countries.
This initiative is expected to promote a positive and nuanced understanding of Pakistan’s rich heritage and intellectual contributions on the global stage, fostering stronger educational and cultural ties between Pakistan and the United Kingdom.
