Pakistan is celebrating the 147th birth anniversary of its national poet, Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal, with great enthusiasm today.
Born on November 9, 1877, in Sialkot, Dr. Iqbal, known as the “Poet of the East,” is revered for his profound poetry and philosophical insight. His writings and ideas awakened the Muslims of the Indian subcontinent, and his landmark Allahabad address in 1930 laid the foundation for the idea of Pakistan, offering a vision of a separate homeland and distinct identity for Muslims in the region.
Dr. Iqbal completed his M.A. in Philosophy from Government College Lahore and went on to study law in London at Lincoln’s Inn. He later earned a PhD in Philosophy from Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, Germany.
To honor the legacy of this great poet and thinker, a ceremonial change of guards took place today at his mausoleum in Lahore. A well-prepared contingent of the Pakistan Navy assumed guard duties, paying tribute to Iqbal’s enduring contributions to the nation.
