Pakistan is hosting the 5th Asian Open Taekwondo Championship, highlighting the country’s growing international importance in sports.
Taekwondo, a 213-country Olympic sport, has a distinct role in Pakistan’s sporting environment.
To promote the sport, the Pakistan Taekwondo Federation joined the World Taekwondo Federation in 1977.
It has since taken part in international events, including the Taekwondo National Games, South Asian Games, Asian Games, Islamic Games, and all martial arts tournaments.
Pakistan will host participants in the senior poomsae and kyorugi categories at the upcoming tournament, which is set to take place in Islamabad from November 1st to 5th, 2023.
This event is projected to attract talent from 27 countries, with 26 provincial and regional teams competing.
Notably, for the first time in taekwondo history, the “President Asian Taekwondo Union” will compete in the 5th Asian Open Taekwondo Championship.
The previous edition of the event, held in Lahore, saw Pakistan’s team bring home three gold, three silver, and one bronze medal, placing second.
Egypt won first place with six gold and two silver medals.
Pakistan’s taekwondo career reached a watershed moment in 2016 when it clinched bronze in the Olympic qualification round.
In addition, two Pakistani athletes got the prestigious Presidential Award for their great athletic exploits.
