Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will present Pakistan’s stance on critical global issues, including Israel’s Gaza offensive, the Kashmir dispute, and climate change, at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) this week, according to Radio Pakistan.
New York is the hub of global diplomacy as world leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders gather for the UNGA, running from September 10-28, for high-level discussions aimed at tackling urgent global challenges.
The Pakistani prime minister will address the assembly on Friday, highlighting Pakistan’s position on key international and regional issues, including Jammu and Kashmir and Palestine. Sharif will reaffirm Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism and emphasize the United Nations’ role in fostering global peace, security, and prosperity.
During his visit, Sharif will participate in several high-level meetings, including discussions on sea-level rise and the UN Security Council’s “Debate on Leadership for Peace.” He is also set to hold bilateral meetings with world leaders and meet UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
Israel’s war on Gaza began on October 7, when Hamas fighters attacked southern Israel, killing 1,200 and taking hostages, as per Israeli reports. Since then, Israel’s military campaign has devastated Gaza, killing over 41,000 people, displacing millions, and triggering a humanitarian crisis.
Pakistan, which does not recognize Israel, has consistently called for an independent Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital. The country has also raised the Gaza issue at various international platforms and sent aid to the Palestinian people.
