In Lahore, Punjab’s Provincial Disaster Management Authority warned of sudden increases in temperatures possibly suggesting heatwaves. Within the next 2 days, as per PDMA, the temperature may rise from 2-5 degree Celsius. PDMA Director general Irfan Kathia suggested caution to the public in light of the incoming heatwaves.
However, the heat wave is not expected to last long because of a Western disturbance in climate. This disturbance will appear as thunderstorms in various parts. The Pakistan Meteorological Department on Tuesday predicted that in Punjab Murree, Galliyat, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Kasur, Okara, Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh, Jhang, Khushab, Sargodha, Mianwali, Pakpattan and Sahiwal will witness rain-duststorm/thunderstorm from May 10 to 12. Whereas Dera Ghazi Khan, Rahim Yar Khan, Khanpur, Bahawalpur and some other areas will likely receive some rain on May 11th/12th.
These rains are sourced from the West, primarily due to global warming. Correspondingly, the interaction between this cold air and the hot air of the subcontinent region will be violent. Foreseeing some extreme weather events because the cold winds are arriving at a time where temperatures are very high in the region, for instance in May and June.
On Friday night or Saturday, rain and thunderstorms in north-western Baluchistan are also predicted. The areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and upper Punjab will also be impacted alongside some isolated cases of hailstorm.
PDMA Director General consequently has shared a precaution with public. Particularly with regards to the threat to various crops because of the thunderstorms.
