Pakistan's World Cup semi-final scenario after New Zealand's win over Sri Lanka
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterLinkedinWhatsapp

In the 41st match of the ICC World Cup 2023 at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, India, New Zealand secured a crucial five-wicket win against Sri Lanka on Thursday.

This outcome further complicates Pakistan’s already challenging path to the World Cup, making their requirement for a massive win over England in the upcoming match in Kolkata on November 11 nearly impossible. The Black Caps’ triumph not only boosts their standing in the tournament but also adds to the intensity of the competition as teams vie for a spot in the knockout stages.

if Pakistan opts to bat first against England, they would need to secure a victory by a margin of 287 runs.

On the other hand, if Pakistan chooses to bowl first, they must successfully chase down the target within 284 balls, equivalent to just 2.4 overs.

Pakistan now has to beat England at the Eden Gardens on Saturday by an #unattainable margin

India, South Africa, and Australia have already secured their spots in the semi-finals of the mega event. Currently, three teams—New Zealand, Afghanistan, and Pakistan—are in contention for the remaining position.

As it stands, New Zealand appears to be in a dominant position to qualify, followed by Pakistan. Afghanistan’s position is the weakest due to its negative net run rate (NRR).

Remaining World Cup Matches Schedule

  • November 10: South Africa vs Afghanistan @ Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad
  • November 11: Australia vs Bangladesh @ Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune
  • November 11: England vs Pakistan @ Eden Gardens, Kolkata
  • November 12: India vs Netherlands @ M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru
