Qazi Faez Isa, the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), stated that the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Act 2023, which aims to control the Supreme Court’s discretionary powers, was approved by parliament with “good intentions.”
The CJP made his comments on Monday when the full Supreme Court resumed hearing the petitions challenging the SC statute.
The petitioner used the decision of the US court as precedent to challenge the changes to the SC law, which angered the CJP during the hearing.
CJP Isa-led full-court bench consists of 15 judges of the Supreme Court including Justice Sardar Tariq Masood, Justice Ijaz Ul Ahsan, Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Munib Akhtar, Justice Yahya Afridi, Justice Aminuddin Khan, Justice Sayyed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi, Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhel, Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Justice Ayesha A. Malik, Justice Athar Minallah, Justice Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi, Justice Shahid Waheed and Justice Musarrat Hilali.
The CJP instructed the petitioners’ attorneys to wrap up their arguments as soon as possible since the top court wanted to wrap up the case’s hearings today.
“At the very least, reference the US Supreme Court’s ruling. Because of how low our standards have fallen, we are now citing a judgment from a New Jersey court.
