Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar stated that he is “certain” that the government will hold general elections within the next three to four months.
When asked about his strategy in an interview with a private television channel, the prime minister replied that if any future situation required an extension in the caretaker setup, they would move to the electoral process within three to four months under the legal framework.
“I believe that within a few months… a few months can be translated into three, three-and-a-half, or four…that remains to be seen…” This will come to an end, and we will move on to the electoral process,” he said.
When asked again if he expected general elections within four months, he said, “I am not (just) hopeful (rather) I am certain.” He stated that, given the limited time available, his government was considering prioritising particular policy objectives in order to at least create the groundwork for any future government to carry on the path.
In response to a query, the prime minister stated that the President of Pakistan may continue in office until his successor was elected. In the event that he willingly resigns, the Senate chairman would fill the position.
Power bills
Concerning electricity rates, the prime minister stated that the government was working on immediate and mid-term alternatives, including plans to convert oil-based power facilities to run on local coal.
Furthermore, the process for privatising one or two power distribution companies will be completed soon, which will help to reduce power theft through the deployment of modern technologies and attract investment.
Sugar crisis
Regarding the sugar price increase, Kakar stated that the government had directed the provinces to form price control committees and that hoarders would be prosecuted. The prime minister stated that the previous government had empowered the caretaker setup by legislation, which required them to act differently than the typical caretaker setup.
According to the prime minister, the Special Investment Facilitation Council was founded as a forum to address the issues blocking investment initiatives. He stated that Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Bahrain had submitted offers and that due diligence was being conducted in preparation for the signing of formal agreements in November or December.
In response to a query, the prime minister stated that the government and military enjoyed a very pleasant working environment.
