According to Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif, the electricity tariff has been raised as part of the agreement agreed with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
This he said in Lahore during the signing of an agreement between Pakistan LNG Limited and the Azeri company SOCAR.
The premier stated unequivocally that the increase in electricity tariffs will not harm the poor.
He clarified that the power increase will not affect around 63% of total household consumers, who use up to 200 units of electricity. According to PM Sharif, 31% of consumers have received partial subsidies.
Furthermore, the current pricing of Rs5.75 would apply to clients who use more than 300 units per month.
To meet International Monetary Fund (IMF) standards, the federal cabinet approved a huge increase in power base pricing by circulation summary last week.
On the suggestion of the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra), the cabinet approved a power tariff increase.
