Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is participating in the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, joined by key ministers and officials. He is scheduled to attend a reception hosted by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, where he will engage in discussions with global leaders.
During the UNGA, PM Shehbaz met with Maldives President Dr. Muizzu to strengthen collaboration in trade, tourism, education, investment, and climate change. Both leaders highlighted the importance of enhancing bilateral ties and promoting economic growth, with a shared focus on fostering regional peace and stability in South Asia.
Pakistan has also endorsed the UN’s “Pact for the Future,” which aims to reform the multilateral system and address global challenges. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, speaking at the Summit of the Future, called for urgent action to uphold the pact’s commitments, particularly given crises like Gaza, which impede sustainable development.
Asif stressed the need to bridge the $4 trillion financing gap for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and advocated for reforms in the international financial system to better support developing nations. He also called for greater representation of developing countries in global financial institutions, equitable tax practices, and reforms in the World Trade Organization to promote development.
