Islamabad, November 7, 2024 – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday officially laid the foundation stone for Ramday University in Thagos, a town in the Ghanche district of Gilgit-Baltistan. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in Islamabad, marking the start of a significant project aimed at improving higher education access in the region.
The university will be constructed under a trust, with funds raised from the Pakistani diaspora. PM Shehbaz expressed his gratitude to Justice (retd) Khalil-ur-Rehman Ramday and his associates for their efforts in making the establishment of the university possible.
“The contributions of all those involved in this project are highly commendable,” said PM Shehbaz during the ceremony. He emphasized that the university’s establishment in the remote area of Ghanche is a significant step towards building a brighter future for the region’s youth. “A higher learning institution in such an isolated location is highly encouraging,” he added.
The prime minister expressed his confidence that Ramday University, located at an altitude of 11,000 feet in Thagos, will set new standards in education, knowledge, and research.
PM Shehbaz also highlighted the crucial role of the private sector in advancing education in Pakistan. He acknowledged that graduates from private educational institutions have made valuable contributions to the country’s development.
“Developing Gilgit-Baltistan and ensuring the welfare of its people remain key priorities for the government,” PM Shehbaz stated. He also mentioned recent initiatives, including the distribution of homes to 62 flood-affected families in the region and the launch of a 100-megawatt solar energy project to address Gilgit-Baltistan’s electricity needs.
Additionally, the Prime Minister noted the creation of the Gilgit-Baltistan Education and Endowment Fund, which aims to provide support for talented and deserving students from the region, empowering them to contribute to Pakistan’s progress.
Speaking at the event, Justice (retd) Khalil-ur-Rehman Ramday revealed that the university will be built on a 200-kanal plot of land in Thagos. “Ramday University will be one of the highest educational institutions in the world,” he said, adding that the university will offer courses in fields such as environmental studies, climate change, hydrology, and mineral resources, aligning with the region’s unique geographical and environmental challenges.
