On November 7 and 8, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will travel to Egypt to represent Pakistan at the United Nations Climate Change Summit (COP27).
As a part of the 27th UN Climate Change Conference, this Summit is taking place.
The PM would attend the COP27 meeting on November 7 and 8, according to a statement made by a Foreign Ministry official, at the invitation of the Egyptian government. Sharm-el-Sheikh would be the location of the conference.
Along with the PM, several officials, including Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto, would travel to Egypt, according to the announcement. The FM spokesperson also stated that the PM would serve as co-vice chair of the round table discussion with his Norwegian counterpart.
In addition, the Prime Minister would attend the conference on the UN General Secretary’s Executive Action Plan. On the sidelines of the Summit, the Prime Minister is also slated to have private consultations with a number of foreign leaders.
COP-27 is taking place when the severe negative effects of climate change are being felt by millions of people worldwide, including millions in Pakistan.
Pakistan would vigorously call for the urgency of climate solidarity and climate justice, among other things, based on the established principles of equity and common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities. Pakistan is a developing country that is most affected by this phenomenon.
The COP is the supreme decision-making body under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change which meets on annual basis to review and advance collective efforts to address climate change.
