Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed gratitude to US President Donald Trump for acknowledging Pakistan’s contributions in the fight against terrorism, reaffirming Islamabad’s commitment to maintaining regional stability.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), PM Shehbaz highlighted Pakistan’s consistent efforts to counter militancy and prevent terrorist organizations from operating within its borders.
Pakistan’s Commitment to Counterterrorism
The prime minister reiterated that Pakistan has long played a pivotal role in eliminating terrorist threats, often at a great human cost.
“Pakistan has always played a critical role in counterterrorism efforts aimed at denying safe havens to terrorists and militant groups the space to operate against any other country,” Shehbaz wrote.
He further emphasized Pakistan’s sacrifices, revealing that over 80,000 soldiers and civilians have lost their lives in the struggle against terrorism.
“We remain steadfast in our resolve and unwavering commitment to combating terrorism, in all its forms and manifestations. In this effort, Pakistan has rendered great sacrifices, including the lives of over 80,000 of our brave soldiers and citizens. However, the resolve of our leadership and our people remains unflinching, to eradicate the menace of terrorism from our country,” he added.
Trump’s Acknowledgment of Pakistan’s Role
PM Shehbaz’s statement came after US President Donald Trump, during his address to Congress, publicly thanked Pakistan for its assistance in apprehending a key terrorist responsible for the deadly 2021 Kabul airport bombing.
“I want to thank, especially, the Pakistani government for helping arrest this monster,” Trump said, referring to the militant behind the attack at Abbey Gate in August 2021, which claimed the lives of 13 US service members and numerous Afghan civilians.
He announced that the US was extraditing the terrorist to face justice, calling it a “momentous day” for the families of those who lost loved ones in the bombing.
Strengthening US-Pakistan Relations
PM Shehbaz reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to working alongside the United States in ensuring peace and security in the region.
“We will continue to partner closely with the United States in securing regional peace and stability,” he stated.
Trump’s rare recognition of Pakistan’s counterterrorism efforts signals a potential improvement in relations between Washington and Islamabad, which have experienced tensions in recent years.
