There is growing speculation that the ninth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) may be relocated to Dubai, prompting an urgent meeting of the PSL Governing Council scheduled for September 25.
This meeting is convened in response to persistent demands from franchise owners who are concerned about the state of PSL affairs.
This gathering will mark the first meeting under the chairmanship of Zaka Ashraf, who leads the PCB Management Committee. Sources indicate that franchise owners have expressed frustration over the perceived sluggishness in the management of PSL, with lingering concerns over the handling of PSL 8 expenses.
The lack of consultation in the choice of the PSL head has particularly irritated franchise owners. Concerns have also been raised concerning the scheduling of the PSL window, which has been scheduled for February-March because franchises were not informed about these dates.
The difficulties that PSL franchises face are exacerbated by overlap with leagues in the UAE and South Africa. Furthermore, franchise owners are concerned that overseas cricketers will register with other leagues, thus impacting player availability for the PSL.
While the PCB has indicated that PSL 9 will be relocated to Dubai, citing expected elections and local administrative costs, there is internal opposition to moving the location. PSL franchise owners say that pulling the league out of Pakistan at this time would be damaging.
The fate of PSL 9 and its possible relocation will almost certainly be a prominent topic of discussion at the forthcoming Governing Council meeting, as stakeholders strive to address these serious concerns and plan a course for the league.
