In a significant development, the interim government of Punjab has recently introduced substantial amendments to the driving license fee structure, marking the initiation of an annual payment system for residents in the region.
Effective from January 2024, this revision brings about a notable increase in fees, with individuals now required to make annual payments instead of the previous five-year cycle.
One of the prominent changes involves a substantial hike in the learner driving license fee, soaring from Rs60 to Rs500 per year, reflecting an increase of Rs440.
For motorcycle enthusiasts, including bike riders and motorcycle rickshaw drivers, the annual license fee has been standardized at Rs500, departing from the previous quinquennial payment requirement.
The fee adjustment extends to car and jeep owners as well, with the 5-year license fee escalating to Rs1,800 per year, compared to the earlier fee of Rs950. For heavy transport vehicles, the annual fee has witnessed a remarkable surge from Rs400 to Rs2,000. Notably, the government has also introduced alterations concerning disabled individuals.
In addition, the annual fee for public service vehicles has undergone a revision, climbing from Rs450 to Rs1,500. Beyond these specific categories, the driving license fee for other classifications has experienced a substantial increase from Rs100 to Rs1,000.
This unexpected and substantial fee hike has placed an additional burden on the citizens, marking the first revision in the fee structure in the past two decades.
