In a pioneering step towards environmental conservation and crime prevention, Punjab has become the first province in Pakistan to introduce round-the-clock satellite-based thermal imaging surveillance. This initiative, launched under the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, aims to safeguard forests and combat illegal activities such as deforestation and poaching.
The system has been initially deployed in the forests of Murree and Rawalpindi, enabling real-time monitoring even during nighttime. With advanced thermal imaging technology, authorities can instantly detect wildfires, unauthorized logging, and other criminal activities.
Utilizing temperature-based imaging, the system provides live satellite feeds that allow continuous tracking of designated forest areas. A dedicated team of Artificial Intelligence (AI) specialists will analyze the data, detect trends, and generate reports to improve decision-making and response times.
Beyond its impact on forest conservation, this cutting-edge technology will also benefit agriculture, livestock, fisheries, afforestation, and wildlife protection efforts. Additionally, it will strengthen security measures in both urban and rural areas by aiding law enforcement in detecting suspicious activities.
Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb emphasized the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards illegal deforestation, wildfires, and poaching. “With this state-of-the-art technology, we can swiftly identify offenders and take legal action,” she stated.
Hailed as a major breakthrough in Punjab’s environmental and technological strategy, this initiative is expected to not only protect the province’s natural resources but also enhance the operational efficiency of law enforcement agencies, setting a precedent for other regions to follow.
