In an attempt to curb the spread of the coronavirus during Eid ul Azha, the Punjab government has imposed a smart lockdown in Punjab. The lockdown shall be in effect from midnight of 27 July to August 5.
This encouraging news follows the news of Punjab reporting zero deaths for the first time in 2 months. Moreover, the province has reported less than 500 daily cases over the course of the last week. Certainly, the Punjab government, wanting to continue this, has decided to impose a stringent lockdown. A notification issued by the Punjab Primary and Secondary Healthcare Department stated that all educational and training institutes, marriage halls, business centers, expo halls, restaurants, theme parks, play areas, beauty parlors, cinemas, and theatres would remain closed. It also called for a complete ban on tournaments involving contact sports, though non-contact sports tournaments could be held without spectators. The order also called for a complete ban on religious and social gatherings in public or private places.
Eidul Fitr saw a steep rise in covid-19 patients and the country’s healthcare sector almost crumbled due to huge inflow of patients. The lockdown is well-intentioned and the hope is that it shall prevent history from repeating.
