Eight Indian nationals arrested in Qatar in August 2022 have been sentenced to death, according to a statement from the Indian government. These individuals, who were employed by a private company in Qatar, were taken into custody on charges of espionage.
Notably, neither the Indian government nor Qatari authorities have disclosed the specific charges against these eight men, all of whom are former Indian Navy personnel.
Despite inquiries, India’s foreign ministry spokesperson remained silent on the matter, offering no comments. The government’s statement mentioned the “confidential nature of the proceedings” as a reason for not elaborating further.
Indian foreign ministry officials, including Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, have previously noted that the precise nature of the charges against these eight individuals remains unclear.
It is important to highlight that Qatar is home to a significant Indian expatriate population, with over 800,000 Indian citizens living and working in the country.
