PTI candidate Sadiq Sanjrani won the election of Senate Chairman defeating Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) hopeful Yousaf Raza Gilani. The opposition challenged the result of the election after it was announced that seven votes cast in favour of opposition candidate Yousuf Raza Gilani were rejected.
However, presiding officer Syed Muzaffar Hussain Shah confirmed later, saying the seven votes were rejected because they were not stamped correctly. Another vote casted in favor of both the candidates was rejected as well.
The total of 98 sanitors have taken part in today’s senate chairman election. Gilani received 42 votes, while the winning candidate Sanjarani secured 48 votes and 7 votes were rejected.
Polling began after 3pm, and an officer called out names of senators in alphabetical order who collected ballot papers from officials and cast their votes at the polling booth.
After being declared the winner, Sadiq Sanjrani took the oath of his office and is now presiding over the election for the Senate deputy chairman.
