Dubai: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has shortlisted Pakistani batter Saim Ayub for the prestigious ICC Emerging Men’s Cricketer of the Year 2024 award. The 22-year-old has enjoyed an impressive year, particularly in the One Day International (ODI) format, where he has been one of the standout performers for Pakistan.
In 2024, Saim Ayub has scored a remarkable 515 runs in just nine ODIs, with a stunning average of 64.37. His standout achievement was scoring three centuries, two of which came in a dominant series against South Africa, where Pakistan whitewashed the Proteas 3-0. Ayub’s consistent performances have made him a key figure at the top of Pakistan’s batting order, earning praise for his dynamic and flamboyant style of play.
The ICC highlighted Ayub’s crucial role in several of Pakistan’s successful away series in 2024, including those in Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Notably, Ayub was instrumental in helping Pakistan secure their first ODI series win in Australia in 22 years, contributing both with the bat and ball. In Australia, during a low-scoring contest, Ayub’s efforts with the ball, including taking key wickets, were critical in Pakistan’s victory.
In addition to his batting prowess, Ayub also showcased his all-round abilities, claiming five wickets in the year and maintaining a solid economy rate of 4.63. His contribution with the ball, such as taking the crucial wicket of Aiden Markram, further demonstrated his value to the team, particularly in tight contests.
Alongside Ayub, other young cricketers shortlisted for the ICC Emerging Men’s Cricketer of the Year 2024 award include Kamindu Mendis from Sri Lanka, Shamar Joseph of the West Indies, and Gus Atkinson of England.
The ICC also revealed the nominees for the ICC Emerging Women’s Cricketer of the Year 2024 award, with India’s Shreyanka Patil, Saskia Horley of Scotland, Annerie Dercksen of South Africa, and Freya Sargent of Ireland making the list.
