The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 brings significant upgrades compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 6. It is slimmer, lighter, and boasts improved durability and intelligence compared to its 2023 predecessor. The most notable enhancement is in its camera system.
Design and Display
The Galaxy Z Flip 6 features a new LTPO panel that adjusts its refresh rate between 1 and 120Hz, enhancing battery life. The main display remains at 6.7 inches with a 1080p resolution. The external display maintains its size at 3.4 inches with a resolution of 720 x 748 pixels and a 60Hz refresh rate, achieving a brightness of 1,600 nits in high-brightness mode.
Marking a first for foldables, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 boasts an IP48 rating for dust and water resistance. While it won’t completely block out dust, it should protect against larger particles. The water resistance remains on par with previous models, and the phone achieves a slimmer profile thanks to a redesigned hinge. The Z Flip 6 also features tougher versions of Armor Aluminum and Gorilla Glass Victus 2, making it the most resilient Z Flip to date.
Internals and Software
Powering the phone is the flagship-tier Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy, ensuring consistent performance across all markets. This powerful chipset handles various AI tasks on the device, and for the first time on a Z Flip model, a vapor chamber keeps things cool under pressure.
The Z Flip 6 offers 12 GB of RAM (up from 8 GB last year) and either 256 GB or 512 GB of storage, but it lacks the 1 TB option found on the Z Fold 6. The software is Android 14 with One UI 6.1.1, with upgrades promised for seven years.
The phone leverages the Flex Display for new AI features. “Suggested Replies” analyzes your message history and proposes responses to incoming texts, allowing you to respond quickly without even opening the phone.
Cameras
The main sensor has been upgraded to 50MP (f/1.8 aperture, 85-degree lens with optical image stabilization), allowing for sharper photos and a built-in 2x zoom. AI software zoom extends up to 10x magnification. The 12-megapixel ultrawide camera and the 10-megapixel selfie camera remain unchanged.
The Z Flip 6 introduces “Auto Zoom” for Flex Mode. This feature adjusts the view to capture the best shot for group photos or selfies when the phone is partially folded and used as a tripod.
Battery and Pricing
The Galaxy Z Flip 6 has a larger battery capacity of 4,000 mAh, up from 3,700 mAh in the Z Flip 5. Charging speeds remain the same, with 25W wired charging offering roughly 50% charge in 30 minutes, and 15W wireless charging available as well.
The Z Flip 6 comes in various colors, including Silver Shadow, Yellow, Blue, and Mint. Additional color options, including Crafted Black, White, and Peach, are available exclusively on Samsung’s website. The starting price for the base 12 GB/256 GB model is $1,100 in the US, a slight increase from the $1,000 launch price of the previous 8 GB/256 GB Z Flip 5.
