The newly appointed captain of the Pakistan test cricket team, Shan Masood, has set an ambitious target for his side ahead of their upcoming tour of Australia — to make history.
In the 12 times Pakistan has toured down under, they have never won a Test series, suffering defeats in the last 14 five-day matches. Despite this challenging record, Masood, aged 34, who took charge of the Test side after Babar Azam stepped down from captaincy in all formats following Pakistan’s disappointing World Cup campaign, sees this as an opportunity.
Addressing a news conference in Lahore before the team’s departure, Masood expressed his determination, stating, “When you have not achieved something in history, then you have an opportunity to change it.” He emphasized the team’s commitment to producing positive results for Pakistan and making a mark in the World Test Championship.
Currently leading the World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle with victories in both Tests against Sri Lanka, Pakistan sits at the top of the nine-team table. India holds the second position, and Australia is in third place. Despite Australia’s recent success in winning the previous cycle of the championship and securing the 50-over World Cup earlier this month, Masood is confident in his team’s abilities to rewrite history Down Under.
