The three-day Shandur polo festival formally began today (Friday) at the world’s highest polo ground in northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
First launched in 1982, the Shandur Polo festival was included in the calendar of national events by the government and is held every year during the first week of July.
This year’s festival started with a colorful opening ceremony, with special tributes from the crowd for paratroopers and paragliders.

The inaugural ceremony, jointly organized by the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government and Frontier Corps North. On the first day of Shandur Polo Festival, three matches were played between different teams.
The spectators applauded the free style thrilling polo match played between Chitral and Gilgit Baltistan teams. Great enthusiasm was witnessed between players and spectators.
A large number of tourists from all over the country flocked to the area to enjoy festival. Senior civil and military officials, local administration officials and a large number of locals attended the event.

The opening ceremony of the festival commenced with squads marching past while students from different schools recited the national anthem. Folk artists also performed Kalash, Chitral, and Khattak dances and songs during the opening ceremony.
The festival is being held this year with the coordination of the governments of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit Baltistan after being suspended in the previous year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
