In a bid to enhance cultural tourism, the restoration of the ancient town of Al Hira, with roots dating back four centuries, has been initiated in Sharjah. Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, recently inaugurated a memorial marking the establishment of Al Hira in 1613, coinciding with the arrival of the Al Qawasim tribe in the coastal enclave.
Additionally, Sheikh Sultan unveiled the Al Hira Literary Majlis, housed in the converted 900-square-meter residence of Sultan bin Abdullah bin Majid Al Owais.
The comprehensive project to rejuvenate the old town encompasses the restoration of the residences of key historical figures such as Sultan bin Abdullah bin Majid Al Owais, Hamid Khalaf Bu Khasrah, and Khalifa Sultan Al Suwaidi.
Al Hira, recognized as a pivotal hub for the development of the UAE’s rich Nabati poetry tradition, hosted various poetry gatherings, dialogues, and literary meetings. The town was historically renowned for the courage, generosity, and wealth of its inhabitants, who displayed keen interest in sciences, arts, and literature. Al Hira was home to a distinguished group of wise men, philosophers, writers, and poets.
During his visit to Al Hira, Sheikh Sultan witnessed the inaugural performance of the play ‘Al Hira Majlis,’ a production by the Sharjah National Theatre troupe. The play, authored by Sheikh Sultan and published by Al Qasimi Publications, serves as a historical documentation of Al Hira and the movement of the Al Qawasim tribe. This event was part of the 20th edition of the Sharjah Arabic Poetry Festival.
The revitalization of Al Hira aligns with Sharjah’s broader strategy to boost tourism projects. In 2022, the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority had announced the development of Al Hira Beach, the longest beach in Sharjah, as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance the tourism landscape.
