Spanish football star Jose Ignacio (Jota) Peleterio has recently joined the growing list of footballers worldwide who have embraced Islam. This trend has seen prominent figures from various countries and clubs, including German defender Robert Bauer, Holland star Clarence Seedorf, Barcelona’s Eric Abidal, Ghanaian star Thomas Partey, French footballer Franck Ribery, Mali’s Frederic Canute, Manchester United’s Paul Pogba, and many others, convert to Islam.
According to reports, Peleterio, who plays for Spanish football club Eibar, British football club Brentford, and Birmingham City, announced his conversion in a video. The 32-year-old athlete disclosed that he embraced Islam after learning about the religion from his friend of 11 years, former Kuwaiti footballer Faisal Boresli. Expressing his joy, Peleterio stated that becoming a Muslim was the best moment of his life, thanking Boresli for guiding him. He shared the heartwarming experience of being welcomed into Islam with a cake presented by Boresli’s mother during a dinner at their house.
Peleterio, born in northwestern Spain, retired from football in 2021. The trend of footballers converting to Islam has gained momentum in recent years. Former Mali international Frederic Canute embraced Islam in 1999, and in 2020, he raised funds for the first mosque in Seville in 700 years. Manchester United’s Paul Pogba, French footballer Nicolas Anelka, and Togo’s former captain Emmanuel Adebayor also made headlines for their conversions.
