The department cautioned that the hacking might result in the disclosure of certain sensitive data.
In early August, the website France-visas, which allows anyone to apply for visas to France, was hacked. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs made the announcement on Friday evening.
According to the department, the France-visas portal’s functionality was quickly restored. It has been established, however, that some of the personal data hackers may have taken.
“On August 10, 2021, the France-visas platform module was targeted by a hack, which was swiftly mitigated. However, the personal data captured during the visa application (email addresses and identity data) might have been stolen, according to a statement issued by the French Foreign Office.
The French National Commission for Informatics and Freedoms (CNIL) was apparently notified of these facts. A complaint has also been lodged by the government, and a court inquiry is ongoing.
