Following the dissolution of the parliament, the President is required under the constitution to select a caretaker setup within 14 days.
In this context, the President has invited the outgoing assembly’s Leader of the House [PM Imran] and Leader of the Opposition, Shahbaz Sharif, to recommend two candidates for the job.
If the prime minister and the opposition leader cannot agree on the caretaker Prime Minister within three days, the subject will be decided by a special committee of MPs under Article 224 A (4) of the Constitution.
In this situation, the Prime Minister and the opposition leader will each submit two candidates to the Speaker of the National Assembly, who would appoint a special committee. The caretaker Prime Minister’s name will be decided by an eight-member committee with equal participation from the Treasury and opposition benches. The Prime Minister and the opposition leader will nominate the committee’s members.
