Former President Donald Trump’s social media app Truth Social is now accessible on the Google Play Store for download (via CNBC). Google removed the app in August due to “insufficient” content filtering rules.
As a platform that “encourages an open, free, and honest global discourse,” Truth Social, which provides a Twitter-like social experience, first debuted on the Apple App Store in February before attempting to make its app available through the Google Play Store.
The company adds that Truth Social has agreed to enforce the moderation measures on user-generated content that Google requires. Google said in a statement that it permits apps on the Google Play Store as long as they “comply with our developer guidelines, including the requirement to effectively moderate user-generated content and remove objectionable posts such as those that incite violence.” Parler, an app with a similar aim, was also allowed back after Google banned it in the wake of the Capitol riots.
The Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG)-owned Truth Social has been having financial problems as a result of its constantly postponed SPAC, in addition to the legal concerns that initially prohibited its introduction on Android. The process of combining with TMTG and going public was once again postponed on Monday by the shell company, Digital World Acquisition Corp. The shareholder vote is now set for November 3rd.
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is currently looking into Trump’s media company as a result of a former Trump Media executive’s complaint alleging securities violations.
Digital World Acquisition Corp has already warned investors that a dip in Trump’s popularity could negatively affect the company, and, as CNBC notes, investor’s opinion of its prospects has also wavered on the possibility that Elon Musk will complete his purchase of Twitter and unban Trump from the platform.
