US media reports on Tuesday claimed that despite Elon Musk recently calling for a pause in the development of artificial intelligence (AI), he is currently pursuing an AI project at Twitter.
According to Insider, Musk has acquired thousands of expensive, high-powered computing processors, and hired AI engineering talent for the project. Meanwhile, other reports suggest Musk has floated the idea of launching a rival to ChatGPT.
However, Musk has cut staff at Twitter as part of his cost-cutting plans following the $44bn takeover of the company last year. This news comes less than two weeks after Musk joined a group of experts in signing an open letter calling for a six-month pause in the development of powerful AI systems, claiming they pose “profound risks to society and humanity”.
Critics of the letter called it a “hot mess” of “AI hype”. Musk’s Twitter AI project is reportedly training a language model to generate written content, but it is unclear what the intended purpose of the project is. Twitter responded to requests for comment with a poop emoji, which has become its practice under Musk.
