Having secured five victories out of six games, Uganda has guaranteed a top-two finish in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Region Qualifier. Consequently, they have earned their place in the T20 World Cup 2024, set to take place in West Indies and USA.
This marks Uganda’s historic debut in an ICC World Cup event, making them the fifth African nation to participate in the T20 World Cup.
In a thrilling encounter, Zimbabwe fell short by five wickets against Uganda. Sikandar Raza’s unbeaten 48 played a starring role for Zimbabwe, but Uganda’s bowlers, led by Dinesh Nakrani (3/14), restricted them to 136/7.
During the chase, Riazat Ali Shah (42) and Alpesh Ramjani (40) guided the Cricket Cranes to a historic five-wicket victory, marking a significant upset in cricketing circles.
Buoyed by this triumph, Uganda went on to defeat Nigeria convincingly. They continued their winning streak with a 33-run triumph over Kenya, positioning themselves on the brink of securing a spot in the T20 World Cup.
Uganda sealed their entry with a comfortable nine-wicket win over Rwanda, showcasing a stellar bowling performance that dismissed Rwanda for a mere 65. The target was efficiently chased down by the ninth over.
In contrast, Zimbabwe, experiencing losses against Namibia and Uganda, missed the opportunity to qualify for the T20 event. Despite their previous edition’s notable one-run win over Pakistan, Zimbabwe couldn’t secure a spot in the upcoming tournament.
