Cricket is a fun sport enjoyed by many around the world. It’s popular in countries that used to be part of the British Empire. There are some amazing stories in cricket, and here’s one of the most incredible.
In the late 1800s, there was a match where a team somehow scored 286 runs off just one ball. Yes, you heard that right! Two batsmen managed to run and score 286 runs in a single delivery. Normally, in cricket, running between the wickets gets you just a few runs, maybe two or three in a play. So, it’s hard to believe how two players nearly scored three centuries in one ball.
This remarkable story was printed in a London newspaper called the Pall Mall Gazette on January 15, 1894. The match took place in Western Australia between Victoria and a team made up of local players.
During the game, Victoria batted first. On the very first ball, the batsman hit it high into the air, and the ball got stuck in the branches of a tall jarrah tree on the field. While the ball was stuck up there, the two batsmen kept running between the wickets.
The bowlers on the other team wanted the umpires to declare it a ‘lost ball.’ But the umpires refused because they could clearly see the ball in the tree.
Now, things get even more interesting. The players tried to find an axe to cut the ball down from the tree, but they couldn’t get one. Then, someone brought out a rifle and tried to shoot the ball down. But they kept missing, and the batsmen kept running.
Finally, the ball was shot down to the ground, but nobody caught it before it hit the ground, which meant the batsmen had already run 286 times.
At this point, Victoria decided to end their innings and declared. Surprisingly, they went on to win the match.
So, this strange cricket story from 1894 tells us that sometimes, in sports, the unexpected can happen, and it can even lead to victory!
