Pakistan’s first floating solar power plant will be developed by the Water & Power Development Authority (WAPDA). While presenting at a workshop on the social and environmental implications of floating solar panel projects, Mohammad Azam Joya, the General Manager of Tarbela Dam, stated this.
According to him, the floating solar project would be constructed in the Tarbela and Ghazi Barotha barrages, generating 300 megawatts of cheap electricity.
Solar panels will be placed above water bodies to provide low-cost electricity, making this a one-of-a-kind project possible. This renovation will cost $325 million and will take two and a half years to complete. The World Bank will give additional cash for this initiative.
In terms of project implementation, Azam stated that two projects will be put in the Tarbela and Ghazi Barotha barrages. Each of these projects will have a capacity of 150 megawatts, bringing the overall capacity of the national distribution system to 300 megawatts.
