ISLAMABAD – Social media platforms, including WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram, faced widespread disruptions during Ashura processions in Pakistan, causing inconvenience to users across the country. The disruptions occurred on Wednesday, affecting multiple service providers.
The 10th of Muharram, also known as Ashura, witnessed massive processions as people commemorated the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, with great solemnity. In light of the significant public gatherings, it is customary for authorities to impose restrictions on mobile internet services to maintain public order. NetBlocks, an internet observatory, noted that such disruptions are typical during this period.
Real-time monitoring service Downdetector reported issues with accessing Facebook and Instagram, both of which are owned by Meta, in addition to WhatsApp. Users across various regions reported difficulties in sending messages, posting updates, and accessing their accounts.
Prior to the Ashura observance, the Punjab government had requested the interior ministry to suspend social media apps from the 6th to the 11th of Muharram. The aim was to prevent the spread of hate material and misinformation that could potentially incite sectarian violence. However, this request was turned down for unspecified reasons.
Despite the social media disruptions, mobile phone services remained active, unlike in previous years when both internet and mobile services were often suspended during significant religious observances. This decision likely reflected an effort to balance security concerns with the need to maintain essential communication services.
While the intention behind restricting social media access is to prevent the spread of harmful content and ensure public safety, such measures inevitably cause inconvenience to the general public. Many users rely on these platforms for communication, news updates, and staying connected with loved ones, especially during significant events like Ashura.
The temporary disruption of social media services during Ashura highlights the ongoing challenges of managing digital communication in the context of maintaining public order and security. As technology continues to play a central role in daily life, finding effective and balanced approaches to these challenges remains a critical concern for authorities and citizens alike.
